For Alan, the canvas is a backdrop for the unexpected. It is raw reality filtered through his conscious, deepened to his subconscious, and reconstructed in a way that elevates the common to the uncommon. There is nothing clichéd about his authentically original style.
"I was at my mom's condo, taking pictures of people on the beach from her balcony. She's on the sixth floor. It was a nice day, a bunch of people were on the beach. One of the shots I took through the camera's eye ended up looking like an eyeball. I kept studying the picture, and I kept coming back to it. This was five or six years ago. I kept coming back to that photograph, saying, there has got to be some way I can translate this in my own way. And it was probably a year and a half later that through studying materials, I was able to create a method that I could use to come up with The POPULUS."

Novel Anthology SERIES
This body of work is inspired by children's novels and fairy tales as well as the morals of the life lessons captured within their plots. As a child, my parents would read these stories to me and explain the basis behind them; as I'm sure many of yours did as well. However, I feel that as we grow older we gradually lose sight of the morals these stories uphold. I believe that we, as a people, need to be reminded of these simple yet necessary tales so that we don't diminish the progress we have made throughout the years. No matter how trivial that progress may be. Even though these stories and tales are rather juvenile in nature, they can be applied to the most complex of situations that are happening not only all over the world today, but also our own daily lives. A lot of this collection is also a reflection of recent traumatic events such as 9/11, the Middle East uprising, oil spills, and the infamous 2008 stock market crash. These interpretations of those folktales we once relied upon help remind me that people need to learn from their mistakes, and evolve. Or perhaps we had the knowledge all along, but we just grew up, matured, lost-sight and forgot their immense value to our society.
Narrative SERIES
This series channels childhood nostalgia of our memories through the lens of modern society. These tactile, three-dimensional mixed-media installations attempt to reconstruct the fairy tale vision of our youth in an entirely new framework. Rebuilt in surreal yet whimsical threads upon a textural foundation, each piece has a unique yarn to spin; doing so by intricately weaving organic elements of nature. Feathers, flowers or straw become sleek, haunting illustrations of animals, objects and people that feel otherworldly yet familiar acting as a storybook vignette.
